Why we pray

“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” James 5:16b
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Scripture is clear in that we, as believers and together as the Body of Christ, are to pray fervently and without ceasing. To that end, Central strongly values the act of prayer, both individually and corporately, in the process of praising and worshipping our God. As a matter of fact, we as a church are committed to prayer and our Church Covenant highlights this fact: “We commit to pursue a more intimate relationship with God through Jesus Christ, for His glory, by devoting ourselves to prayer…”.

Prayer is described by one pastor and author as the “slender nerve that moves the muscle of omnipotence”. What a glorious truth that God would choose to move and enact His never-ending, all-sustaining power through our individual and corporate prayer! It is with this thought that we gladly enter into prayer together and encourage all of Central Baptist to go to God in prayer on a frequent and regular basis to the glory of God. After all, Jesus said Himself in John 14:13 “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

So, why do we pray? We pray because we are called to do so by God Himself. We also pray because God has chosen to work His sovereign will through the means of our prayers to His glory. Lastly, we pray because it is an undue honor given to us that we may be used by God as we bring our adoration, confession, thanksgiving, intercession and supplication to Him in prayer on a regular basis.

You will notice that we pray together at least four times within a Sunday morning service. These are perfect opportunities to take part in what God has called us to do “that our joy may be full” (John 16:24). We also offer two other staff-led times to come together for corporate prayer - Mondays, 7am, in the Brick House and our Wednesday evening worship service, 6pm, in the Worship Center. We also offer two opportunities for corporate prayer led by lay leaders and the congregation - Sunday mornings, 9:10am, in the Chapel, and Sunday evenings, 6pm, in the Brick House. In addition to these corporate prayer times, we encourage that you go to the Father in prayer on an individual and regular basis as He has commanded us.

What can you pray for as you do so? We would urge you to pray with us in the following areas: confession and repentance of sin, for the lost, for revival and spiritual awakening, for mission efforts - both local and worldwide, for the ministry efforts of Central Baptist, for the ministry efforts of our local churches and association, for our government and cultural leaders, for the sick and those in need, for our pastors and church leaders, and lastly for persecuted believers around the world.

Here at Central, we greatly value prayer and the role that it plays in our church, and we beg of you - join us as we eagerly, fervently, and ceaselessly go to our Father together that His will may be done in and through us to His glory.
